Come along with us!

We’re on an epic adventure to explore our country and visit the national parks

Hi there! We’re the Hutton fam. We love traveling and exploring.
Ember, Matt, Elleny (14), Everett (12), and Adler (10)

Our home sweet motorhome is a Dynamax Force HD that serendipitously fell into our hands (that crazy story is here!) in April 2022. We’ve been slowly remodeling it and tweaking it to make it our own ever since.

Most of the photos are of our dog, Riggs, and we’re not sad about it one bit. He is a high energy Pudelpointer with an easy going personality that makes him the best travel companion you could ask for.

The weather forecast didn’t look great, but adventure doesn’t wait for the sun to shine. We were off on a 2 day excursion on the open sea. Wish us luck!

Before we left Soldotna we had the chance the meet a local family that was processing their salmon at the campground. Alaskan residents are allowed to dip net as part of the subsistence fishing regulations. It was very cool to see how the family worked together to prepare food for the upcoming winter.

Today we left our secluded campground in the woods and headed to a campground in Soldotna for some much needed full hook ups. The steady stream of laundry for a family of five might just be the death of me! 🧺

We spent the day at the campground and then headed out for a wildlife drive in the evening.

After 10 fun-filled days in Seward, we had to move on. Alaska is a big place and we’ve got some adventures ahead of us!

This morning we left our waterfront campsite and headed back to the Seward KOA for our last night. We needed some full hook ups to catch up on laundry and dishes!

Today was a rainy, chilly day in Seward but we are getting used to getting outside no matter the weather. ☔️

Today we moved campsites for our third time while in Seward. Because we were late in planning we had to piece together available reservations which meant switching campgrounds. By the looks of the line at the dump station we weren’t alone as there were lots of campers coming and going.

When we found out Seward is THE place to be in Alaska for the Fourth of July, we knew that we had to arrange our travel plans to make it happen. Apparently the population swells from around 2,500 to about 40,000 – make that 40,005 this year because the Hutton fam is in town. 🇺🇸

Today was a recovery day after our hiking adventure yesterday. We’re not exactly sure why Riggs needed a day off but he was happy to take it easy for a few hours this morning too! 🧖

How can taking two extra kids on an epic hike in Kenai Fjords National Park possibly be easier than bringing just our own kids? It’s simple mom math. 🧮

This morning was a cloudy, rainy day in Seward but we were told that is the “perfect” weather for sea kayaking. We’ll be the judge of that. 😜

The weather wasn’t ideal but we had things to do and hanging out with Nana and Papa on the schedule for today.

Another day, time to see another part of Kenai Fjords National Park. Today was all about the water, plants and animals that are a part of the fjord estuary ecosystem.

Today we left Cooper Landing and headed down to Seward. One of the locals even came out to say goodbye as we drove away… 👋🏻

Today we took a day trip as far west as we could go on the Kenai Penninsula without driving into the Cook Inlet. 🌊 The city of Kenai is known as “the best place to Alaska” and it really did have a lot going on.

Today we were reminded why we try not to arrive at a new campground late at night…we made a silly mistake when we rolled into Cooper Landing. 🫣

Unfortunately we had to part ways with the Cruising Clemons as we both headed in separate directions today. Luckily we’ll be seeing them again down the road!

Not only did we find a campground with other kids, the Clemons family showed up as well! 🎉 Adventuring is always more fun with friends so today we headed to the Iditarod Headquarters in Wasilla together.

Earthquake? What earthquake?? 😲

Today was another boring yet necessary catch up day at the campground. I promise that we’ll be back to exciting adventures soon! 😉

We moved down the road just a few miles to the tiny town of Willow. There is not much here but occasionally we need a few days to catch up on life and work before moving on to the next adventure.

We’ve been loving all of the sunlight here in Alaska and today there was nearly 20 hours of daylight for the summer solstice. Not sure I would enjoy the long winters but I’ll happily spend any summer here in Alaska! ☀️

Today was another day exploring Talkeetna. The campground (although not designed for big rigs so we were warned that we might not fit) has been perfect for us. The local Alaskan families camping here have welcomed our kids into their group and they have been having Nerf gun battles together every chance they get!

Today we visited the Walter Harper Talkeetna Ranger Station and learned about climbing Denali. It sounds like a goal that I will not be adding to my bucket list…

Goodbye Denali National Park, hello huge mountain named Denali! As we left our campground in Healy and headed towards Talkeetna we were greeted with the most amazing views. 🏔️

We were tired (especially Riggs) but it was time to head back to Denali for one last visit today. What better way to spend Father’s Day than harassing your kids to take a hike with you? 🤪 Thanks to a special visitor the hike turned out to be worth it.

Today was our second day to explore Denali National Park and the plan was to drive to the end of the road and go for a hike. It won’t take long because you can only drive a private vehicle 15 miles into the park.

Today was our first day exploring Denali National Park and Preserve. It felt good to check off another national park from our list!

We were packing up the RV to leave Fairbanks this morning when something unusual happened during Riggs’ walk around the campground…

Our final day in Fairbanks ended up being a busy one since we left everything for the last minute. We were having too much fun catching up with friends at the campground that we didn’t do much exploring of the town…until today. 😅

We figured that it was time to wash the car when I literally could not see out of the windows while Everett and I were running errands around Fairbanks yesterday. There was a free carwash station right at the campground so we took advantage of it.

Everyone was feeling much better after a good night of sleep at our surprisingly nice campground here in Fairbanks. The first order of business for today was to restock all the things after the long drive.

While we would have loved a day to rest, the fridge was bare so we had to get to Fairbanks where they have a legit grocery store. One last 200 mile stretch today!

Do you want the good news or the bad news first? The good news is that today was the day that we crossed back into the US. 🥳. The bad news is that the Alaska Highway wasn’t quite over even once we were in the US. 😭

The kids desperately needed some outdoor time before yet another day of driving. Today will be day 7 of all day driving if you’re playing along. Whose idea was this anyway?! 😅

Today was a very good morning! Everett finished his 5th grade math curriculum and I let him rip up the workbook which was very therapeutic for him. 🥴

Last night we finally had to break down and stay at an RV campground with full hookups so we could catch up on laundry and reset for the next few days. There were very few options to chose from in Watson Lake and they all were terrible. 😣

Matt tried to stretch this morning but Riggs was not having any of it. Neither of them were looking forward to another long day of driving, but there’s only one way to Alaska at this point! 🧘🏻

We dry camped at Charlie Lake Provincial Park which is similar to a state park in the US. Some RVers recommend not making reservations along the Alaska Highway because you never know how far you’ll be able to drive each day. This is a new method for us but last night it worked out splendidly!

After an overnight boondocking at the not so beautiful (but free!) Great Northern Casino parking lot, we were almost ready to start driving to Alaska. The cupboards were bare and there was a Costco in town so we had some important errands to do first. 🛒

Our Canadian National Park exploring days have come to an end and today we started the long drive to Alaska. There is lots to see along the 1,585 miles we have left in Canada but we’re planning to move a little faster. 🥵 Here goes nothing…
