Day 164 / June 3, 2024

We dry camped at Charlie Lake Provincial Park which is similar to a state park in the US. Some RVers recommend not making reservations along the Alaska Highway because you never know how far you’ll be able to drive each day. This is a new method for us but last night it worked out splendidly!

Soon it was time to get back on the highway for another rainy day of driving. We had our first taste of road construction, but the road condition overall has been much better than we were anticipating.
And then we got a taste of the Alaska Highway that we’d been reading about…
Diesel refueling is different with no truck stops along the Alaska Highway. We quickly learned how to use a “cardlock.”
Everyone needed the stretch break after a few hours of driving.
Like shoveling during an avalanche ❄️
We passed through Fort Nelson where the wildfires were recently raging. A portion of the Alaska Highway was closed since May 10th and just reopened a few days ago.
We’ve been seeing lots of black bears and even a few grizzly bears just hanging out along the road.
Riggs had a hard time relaxing during the drive because he’d jump up every time we’d yell, “Look! Bear/moose/elk/porcupine on your driver/passenger side!”
Much to Riggs’ dismay, we might be adding bison to our wildlife checklist soon.
We kept pushing to our next stop: Tetsa River Provincial Park
The long day of driving took a toll on all of us but we made it to the campground around 8:30 pm. 😴
It’s way too easy to stay up late when there is this much sunlight at 10 pm!
