Day 195 / July 4, 2024

When we found out Seward is THE place to be in Alaska for the Fourth of July, we knew that we had to arrange our travel plans to make it happen. Apparently the population swells from around 2,500 to about 40,000 – make that 40,005 this year because the Hutton fam is in town. 🇺🇸

Riggs was highly suspicious that he was going to get left behind today.
First up on the schedule was the cutest parade through Main Street in downtown Seward.
One of the floats in the parade even threw out warm chocolate chip cookies! 🍪
Another Fourth of July tradition in Seward is the Mount Marathon race. It is called the toughest 5K in the world…for good reason! The grueling course climbs 3,022 feet followed by a fast and dangerous descent back down the mountain.
After the parade was over the runners from the men’s race started to come down the street. The kids enjoyed giving everyone a high five on their way to the finish line but were a little worried at how dirty and bloody some of the competitors were. 😲
We headed over to the base of the mountain to watch the women’s race.
Our kayak guide that we met a few days ago was competing so we tried to catch of glimpse of her as the runners started their trek up the mountain.
On our way back through town Adler found his dream boat featuring one of his favorite animals: The Honey Badger 🦡
We hung out at the Clemon’s primo campsite…
…and joined in on celebrating Bryce’s birthday.
Soon it was 11 pm and time to watch the boat parade along the Seward Waterfront.
Finally at 12:01 am the fireworks started! 🎆
Fireworks just hit different when this is as dark as it gets in Alaska right now. 😎
Our Fourth of July in Seward was definitely a memorable one!
