Day 176 / June 15, 2024

Today was our second day to explore Denali National Park and the plan was to drive to the end of the road and go for a hike. It won’t take long because you can only drive a private vehicle 15 miles into the park.

Six million acres of land and we drove a total of 15 miles! Denali is all about preserving wilderness.
The kids spent some time throwing rocks into the Savage River. #CheapEntertainment
We were greeted by some awesome views of the Savage River Valley once we finally started our hike.
We spotted a porcupine in the rocks. It surprised us how much bigger a porcupine was than we thought it would be!
Peek way up high in the sky
And down low on the rocks we spotted the cutest little pika. We’ve wanted to see one and it did not disappoint!
Savage River Loop trail was a walk in the (Denali) park.
Denali National Park is so big that we can’t even see Denali from the area you can drive to. We’re hopeful that we can see the mountain during our drive away from the national park. Ironic, right?!
The park was originally established as Mt. McKinley National Park in 1917, and was the first national park created to protect wildlife. The park was incorporated into Denali National Park and Preserve in 1980.
