After an overnight boondocking at the not so beautiful (but free!) Great Northern Casino parking lot, we were almost ready to start driving to Alaska. The cupboards were bare and there was a Costco in town so we had some important errands to do first. 🛒
Costco in Canada only accepts Mastercard (news to me) which meant a trip back to the RV to get a different credit card.Costco poutine, anyone? 🍟🧀🍗Matt checked the battery level before we left town and it was even lower than yesterday. This revelation, combined with the fact this would be the last “big city” we’d be seeing until Fairbanks, meant I had to make yet another trip to Costco. Three Costco trips this morning for anyone counting! 🤪Grand Prairie, Alberta is home to a huge, 40-ft tall metallic sundial. ☀️Headed west and back in British ColombiaThe 1,387 mile long Alaska Highway starts in Dawson Creek.The Alaska Highway was an engineering marvel of World War II and has been described as the largest and most difficult construction project since the Panama Canal. It was originally a 1,422 mile long drive to Alaska, but due to highway re-routing, it is now 40 miles shorter. Alaska, however, has not changed the original mileposts, so there is a mileage discrepancy of 40 miles when you cross the Alaska/Yukon border.This seems like an Alaska Highway tradition that we could get behind.Good luck finding the Dynatrekkin’ sticker!Approximately 360,000 tourists (not counting canine passengers) drive the highway each year.10% downhill grade?! Alaska Highway, let’s gooooo!Our first day on the Alaska Highway was pretty uneventful except when we had to use the air horn to move wildlife off the road. 🤯
