Day 202 / July 11, 2024

Before we left Soldotna we had the chance the meet a local family that was processing their salmon at the campground. Alaskan residents are allowed to dip net as part of the subsistence fishing regulations. It was very cool to see how the family worked together to prepare food for the upcoming winter.

We headed back to Whittier today so we stopped by the Chugach National Forest Visitor Center for another badge that was not finished during our previous visit. Who is their mean teacher who makes them complete their work?!
This trip through the Whittier Tunnel was a little bit different than last time. 👀
I got to experience driving the SUV through the tunnel while Matt drove the Beast. 😱
Matt reported back that driving the RV through the tunnel was every bit as nerve wracking as he thought it would be.
We grabbed a dry camping spot at the Whittier Bay Campground aka a gravel lot with waterfalls cascading down the mountain on one side and the Prince William Sound on the other side.
The weather wasn’t great, but you just can’t beat the view right out your front door.
Matt and I headed into town and quickly remembered there wasn’t much to see. The police station for the population of 257 people is ironically the nicest building in town. A place with only one way in and out doesn’t feel like the best location to commit a crime!
Tomorrow we’ll be out on the Prince William Sound…
