Day 157 / May 27, 2024

Today was another bucket list item for me. Even though we visited a few days too early and Lake Louise was still partially frozen – it was just BEAUTIFUL. 😍

Lake Louise, sitting at 1,731 meters, is the highest permanent settlement in Canada.
The water temperature rarely gets above 5 degrees Celsius and swimming in Lake Louise is not recommended. 🥶
The water in Lake Louise comes from melting snow and glacial ice from the mountains above.
The famous turquoise color comes from glacial silt that is carried into the water by meltwater from the surrounding glaciers.
Beginning in 1899, mountain climbing guides came here from Switzerland and taught safe climbing techniques to climbers.
We didn’t do any mountain climbing, but did take a nice long hike uphill.
At first there was just a little bit of snow left on the trail.
The views as we climbed higher above Lake Louise were fantastic.
We should have been less concerned about running into a bear and more worried about our bird dog flushing out a spruce grouse! 🪶
To say that Riggs was “birdy” would be an understatement. The dog was WIRED. 😵‍💫
As we continued up the trail got much snowier but we pushed on.
We got a glimpse of Mirror Lake (frozen solid) and Little Beehive (looks like a beehive). 🐝
Still more snow!
We actually own five pairs of ice cleats. They’re in our closet back home in Hudson. 🤦🏻‍♀️
We love chasing waterfalls.
The hike up to Lake Agnes Tea House was gorgeous. The tea house, which was built in 1901, was not open for the season yet.
We knew that it would be closed so we brought along our own homemade cookies as hiking motivation. 🍪

Time to start heading back down!

Selfie attempts with a teenager 😝
Before we knew it, we were back down to the lake.
One last look at Lake Louise
We took ourselves out to dinner at Magpie and Stump to celebrate our last day in Banff.
Thanks for a fun visit, Banff!
