Day 151 / May 21, 2024

Today was a big day for our refrigerator. 😂 Since our current map doesn’t even have Canada on it, we had to temporarily cover it up so we can track our next leg of the journey. Lower 48 portion is in the books! 🗺️

We stayed at St. Eugene Resort campground while we were in Cranbrook. The RV park was next to the St. Eugene Mission building which at first glance we thought was beautiful. Then we learned that the school was part of a policy to assimilate Indigenous people into the non-Native population and has been called “cultural geocide.” 😥
This statue, titled The Children, is to honor all children who attended Indian Residential Schools.
The story of St. Eugene Resort is a complicated one.
They believe it is the only project in Canada where a First Nation reclaimed a former Indian residential school and turned it into a resort for future generations to enjoy. We’re glad that we stumbled upon St. Eugene and could share this important and difficult piece of history with the kids.
