Day 116 / April 16, 2024

We woke up to a balmy 23 degrees our first morning at the Grand Canyon. Well, technically we were one mile outside of the national park at the most run down and nasty campground that somehow still came with a premium price tag. Location, location, location as they say! 🤑

The campground is in the direct flight path of the airport so there were lots of helicopters to spot. 🚁
Our first (Matt’s second) peek at the Grand Canyon was pretty grand! We all agreed that it didn’t even look real.
The family story is that when Matt’s parents brought him to the Grand Canyon as a teenager he walked over to the edge and said, “Is that it?” His mom said that she wanted to push him right off the edge. 😂
This time around Matt, along with everyone else, couldn’t get enough of this massive hole in the ground.
There are forest, desert and river habitats in the Grand Canyon and Adler was determined to search all of them for signs of wildlife.
One of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World down; only six more to go. ✓
The elevation in the Grand Canyon ranges from 2,000 feet to 8,000 feet above sea level.
We took a hiking break to work on the Junior Ranger book. The kids had to write a cinquain and after some grumbling came up with this poem:
Grand Canyon
breath-taking, awe-inspiring
changing, shifting, transforming
more than just rocks
stunning
Dogs are not allowed below the rim of the Grand Canyon so this view will have to suffice for Riggs. 🥺
Back at the campground aka overpriced parking lot there were elk grazing nearby. Adler, who hadn’t put down his binos all day, got himself into position in case they approached. It’s nice to know he’s got our back. ☺️
