Riggs went along with his usual morning routine not aware that he was about to spend the entire afternoon alone while we biked the Going-to-the-Sun Road. No dogs allowed. 🫣
Driving the iconic Going-to-the-Sun Road is the most popular activity to do when visiting Glacier. The road, however, is not open to cars until all of the snow has been cleared.Because the elevation is 6,646 feet at the peak of the road the snow isn’t completely cleared off until early July. That means there are only about 30 days per year when it is possible to bike the road without cars.We were there in that narrow window and had our bikes so we thought we’d give it a go! 🚵🏻♂️Even starting from the bottom of the road the views were amazing. The weather, however, was not amazing. We were absolutely freezing! We pulled over and added all of the extra layers we had packed.Climbing in elevation and seeing some epic views.Adler was freezing and wanted to called it quits but we pulled out the emergency tow rope and kept him going a little bit longer. 😉The higher we climbed the cloudier and colder it got. 🥶Eventually it was so cold, rainy and cloudy that we couldn’t even see much.
We started downhill and got to enjoy a cold spray of water from our tires hitting our faces all the way back down. Brrr! The views were worth every freezing cold moment. The temperatures at various elevations can vary significantly. It may feel like summer down below and winter up high but today it was freezing everywhere we rode!Riders can get warm on the 6% grade uphill, but then add winter hats, gloves, and coats for the ride back down. We had already added all of our layers before zooming down the mountainside so it was a chilly ride!Biked (part of) the Going-to-the-Sun Road ✅After our ride we stopped at Lake McDonald Lodge. The classic Swiss chalet style lodge was built in 1913 to resemble a rustic hunting lodge. It won Adler’s stamp of approval! 🦌The lodge sits on the edge of beautiful Lake McDonald. At ten miles long and nearly 500 feet deep, Lake McDonald is the largest lake in the park.Once we got home from our day at the park, Riggs didn’t let us out of his sight again.Beautiful sunset after a fun day! 🌄
