Day 95 / March 26, 2024

Today we stepped out of our comfort zone and visited New Orleans. The main objectives were to visit New Orleans Jazz National Historical Park, eat some beignets, and then get out of town before dark! 😅

Standing at the end of the Mississippi River – only 2,350 miles away from Minnesota.
Steamboat NATCHEZ is the last authentic steamboat on the Mississippi River. It was cool to hear the calliope as it passed by!
We found the visitor center in the middle of the French Quarter.
Took the obligatory photo and then realized that the visitor center had actually moved to a different location. 🤦🏻‍♀️
So we continued to walk around the French Quarter…
…and finally ended up at the actual visitor center.
The NPS combined the visitor centers for two urban sites in New Orleans so we were about to learn about jazz and Jean Lafitte. Talk about a random combination!
These future city engineers really enjoyed this interactive display about New Orleans.
Our resident linguist spent some time learning about why New Orleans is often described as a “cultural gumbo” and how that is related to jazz music.
New Orleans Jazz National Historical Park is the only national park site that is devoted to music.
The Arrowhead Jazz Band is made up of NPS rangers – a pretty awesome gig for a park ranger who is also a musician!
Unfortunately they were performing at a different location today so we weren’t able to hear them.
Getting quizzed on their new knowledge about all things jazz.
We (ok, just Matt and I) were obsessed with the beautiful buildings in the French Quarter.
Eating some authentic NOLA food was next on our to do list.
Crawfish gumbo
Fish Po’ Boy
We enjoyed the music (and the kids worked up the courage to put a tip in the jar) while we waited for a table at Cafe Du Monde.
We’ve been waiting for this moment! 😋
The beignets were a powdered sugar pillow of yumminess.
Time for more walking around the French Quarter
St. Louis Cathedral near Jackson Square
Ridin’ that powdered sugar high!
There is an ongoing debate on who has the best beignets in town so we thought we’d better try out Cafe Beignet too. 😂
New Orleans: mission accomplished! 🎺
